Event attendance reaches new high PLANET members travelled to Washington, D.C., to meet with legislators and volunteer in a service project at two national cemeteries. (Recent Events page) go to top Welcome aboard Congratulations to Jerry Grossi of Arborlawn in Lansing, Michigan, for his appointment to PLANET’s board of directors. He will oversee PLANET’s business development area. Grossi is vice president and COO of Arborlawn and oversees operations for Arborlawn’s affiliate company, Spartan Irrigation. “I am so pleased to be named to the board of this powerful organization,” states Grossi. “The Professional Landcare Network has become known as the premier organization for lawn care, design/build/installation, interior plantscaping, and landscape management.” Grossi is a past president and board member of the PLANET legacy organization, Professional Lawn Care Association of America (PLCAA). He also has served as president of the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation, president of the Green Industry Expo, and president of the Lawn Sprayers of Michigan. go to top Senators named Business Champions of the Year Recipients of this year’s annual Business Champion of the Year Award were announced at PLANET’s recent Legislative Day on the Hill event in Washington, D.C. Co-recipients of the award include U.S. Sens. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), Barbara Mikluski (D-Md.), and Mel Martinez (R-Fla.). This award was created to honor individuals who have positively influenced the green industry. Serving his second term in the U.S. Senate, Hagel has played a valuable and potentially historic role in helping his colleagues assemble a comprehensive immigration reform bill that tackles all of the necessary issues. His work on immigration reform has been constructive and responsible. Martinez also has worked hard on comprehensive immigration reform and the compromise offer that broke the Senate bill stalemate. He was sworn in as Florida’s senator in 2005 and took his place in the history books as the first Cuban-American to serve in the U.S. Senate. PLANET also chose Mikulski as an award recipient because of her stand on H-2B issues in the bills that she has introduced over the years. She won her first Senate race in 1986 with 61 percent of the vote and was re-elected with large majorities in 1992, 1998, and 2004. Mikulski also serves as dean of the Senate women. go to top Safe and sound Congratulations to the nearly 300 company members that received PLANET’s Safety Recognition Awards.
