Earn the Certified Turfgrass Professional of Cool Season Lawns (CTP-CSL) designation by  studying Management of Cool Season Lawns and passing the exams.  The course was developed by Dr. Peter Landschoot, professor of Turfgrass Science at Penn State University. 

The Management of Cool Season Lawns gives the beginning lawn care or landscape contractor a foundation for understanding lawn and grounds management in the northern United States.

The self-study course has 10 sections on topics related to managing cool season turfgrasses.
1. Cool season turfgrasses
2. Establishment and renovation
3. Fertilization and liming
4. Mowing, thatch management, aeration and irrigation
5. Pest management
6. Weed management
7. Diseases
8. Identification and management of insect pests
9. Pesticides and pesticide safety
10. Pesticide application equipment and calibration

Special interest areas include:

  • Growth and development of cool season turfgrasses
  • Turfgrass identification
  • Sodding, seeding, mulching and rejuvenating
  • Determining a soil’s pH value
  • Performing calculations to deliver correct amounts of fertilizer
  • Thatch composition
  • Integrated pest management
  • Life cycles of Turfgrass weeds
  • Chemical control practices for improved weed management
  • Disease diagnosis
  • Pesticide usage
To earn the designation, a candidate must pass two exams.  Test #1 covers the first half of the study material.  Test #2 covers the second half of the study material.  The two exams can be taken in the same sitting.

Candidates may take the tests at a date on the PLANET written test schedule or register for a exam at a local LaserGrade Test Center and take the test in a computer-based format. (Extra fee required).

LaserGrade computer-based testing
Full test (both exams) PLANET/LCAP member fee is $200.00 + $70.00 = $270.00
Full test (both exams) nonmember fee is $250.00 + $70.00 = $320.00
Single section, member fee is $100.00 + $50.00 + $150.00
Single section, nonmember fee is $125.00 + $50.00 = $175.00

Management of the Certification Program

The International Certification Council is comprised of eight leaders in the landscape contracting industry.  They represent a range of educational backgrounds and have sufficient years of experience and special expertise in lawncare and landscape contracting to oversee the certification program. 

The Objectives of Professional Landcare Network’s Certification Program are:
