The “Educator of the Year Award” was created to recognize educators in the industry who have been passionate supporters and tireless ambassadors of the landscape industry. Recipients of the award are described as going above and beyond the call of duty, contributing time, energy, and enthusiasm to their programs and being dedicated to the education of the future leaders of the industry 2008 Educator of the Year Nomination Form ![]() The 2007 Outstanding Educator of the Year is Jack E. Ingels of State University of New York (SUNY) Cobleskill campus Jack’s education began with a bachelor of science from Purdue University, followed by a master of science degree from Rutgers and continued post-graduate studies at Ball State University and College of St. Rose. Jack believes strongly in the traditional role of the university as a leader in the development of new methods and ideologies. He also wants graduates to be initiators and innovators within the industry, not just industrious followers. Ingels has been a professor at the SUNY College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill since 1978 and was responsible for developing its landscape program. He has served as the chairman of the department of plant science, and chair of the department’s committees on landscape curriculum and landscape facilities development. An exceptional educator, Ingels has shown commitment both inside and beyond the classroom. In 1978, he was awarded a grant for $33,000 for adding a greenhouse that accommodates the special needs of physically handicapped students. He also is an academic advisor and a high-intensity advisor to at-risk students. Based on his wealth of knowledge, Ingels authored two text books widely used in high school and college classrooms, Landscaping: Principles and Practices, which is in its 6th edition, as well as Ornamental Horticulture: Science, Operations and Management in its 3rd edition. His accomplishments, passion, and advocacy for students in the green industry serves as testament for his receiving this prestigious award. Past recipients of this award were Frank Millsap of Richland College (2001), Steve Angley of Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo (2002), Martha Hill of Hinds Community College (2003), Kent Hammond of Ohio State University - Agricultural Technical Institute (2004), Grant Reid of Colorado State University (2005), and Phil Allen, Ph.D. of Brigham Young University – Provo (2006). |
